How to Create a Floor Plan in 3 Simple Steps
Step 1: Draw Your Floor Plan with Precision Tools
Start by opening the Roomivio editor — no signup or account creation required for the free tier. You'll see a blank canvas with a precision grid overlay (typically 50cm or 1-foot squares, adjustable in settings). Click the Wall tool from the left toolbar and begin drawing the outer perimeter of your space by clicking to place points and creating straight wall segments. The canvas features intelligent snapping: walls automatically align to the grid and snap to perpendicular angles (90°, 45°, 30°) for professional-looking plans.
Once the outer walls are drawn, divide the interior space into rooms by adding partition walls. Mark doorway openings by selecting the Door tool and clicking on wall segments where doors should appear — doors automatically orient correctly (swinging inward or outward) and display standard widths (60cm, 70cm, 80cm, or custom). Similarly, place windows by selecting the Window tool and clicking on exterior walls. Windows display as double-line openings with standard sill heights and can be customized to match your property's actual fenestration.
For existing buildings, use the Import tool (PRO feature) to upload a PDF or image of your current floor plan. Drag furniture items onto the canvas and position them precisely using the grid snap feature. Click any item to rotate it in 90° increments or enter exact rotation angles in the properties panel. Resize furniture by dragging corner handles or entering exact dimensions — critical when fitting specific furniture pieces you already own into the floor plan. The cursor displays distance measurements as you drag items, helping you maintain proper clearances (doorway swing zones, walkway widths, furniture-to-wall gaps).
Use the Electrical Symbols library (bonus feature) to mark outlet locations, light switch positions, ceiling fixtures, and the electrical panel. Electricians and contractors appreciate floor plans that show electrical infrastructure alongside furniture layouts, reducing change orders and ensuring outlets are positioned conveniently for lamps, appliances, and electronics.
Add dimension labels, room labels, and notes using the Annotation tools.
